Savoy Cabbage
Savoy Cabbage, with its crinkled and textured leaves, is a classic and versatile vegetable that adds both visual interest and delightful flavor to your garden and meals. This heirloom variety is known for its mild taste and tender texture, making it a favorite for various culinary applications.
To cultivate Savoy Cabbage, select a sunny location with well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Plant the seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost or sow them directly in the garden after the danger of frost has passed. Sow the seeds 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep and keep the soil consistently moist during germination.
Transplant seedlings into the garden when they are sturdy and have a couple of sets of true leaves. Allow adequate spacing between plants, generally 12-18 inches apart, to ensure proper air circulation and room for the cabbage heads to form. Water regularly, especially during dry periods, and provide a layer of mulch to retain soil moisture.
Harvest Savoy Cabbage when the heads are firm and reach the desired size. The crinkled leaves not only contribute to its visual appeal but also make it an excellent choice for various culinary uses, from coleslaw to stir-fries. Enjoy the homegrown goodness of Savoy Cabbage in your garden and on your plate.
